It's a bit like eating in botanical gardens whose greenhouse-like terraces and wraparound gardens are big enough to accommodate tour groups almost without your noticing them under a thicket of vines, lemons, and orange trees.

Family managed for over 100 years, and boasting celebrities like Sofia Loren, Andy Warhol, and Vittorio de Sica as former patrons, O' Parrucchiano's vast popularity has not led it to raise prices unreasonably, nor to compromise quality.

Green waist-coated waiters keep up a brisk two-way traffic on the terraced staircases between the kitchen and the dining patio up top, carrying laden platters up and empty trays down, calling out table numbers and orders to a woman sitting at a lonely table to one side, scribbling furiously at an array of still-open restaurant checks spread out on the table to keep them up to date.

Most seafood dishes, since they change with daily availability, are printed on the "chef recommends" menu, so look thence for scialatielli ai frutti di mare (pasta with seafood) and involtini di pesce spada (swordfish roll-ups).

Otherwise try cannelloni "Favorita" (pasta leaves wrapped around meat fillings and baked) or gnocchi followed by a scaloppina di vitello alla Sorrentina (veal scallops under tomato sauce and slices of mozzarella) or a filetto al pepe rosa (beef fillet with pink peppercorns).
