Capri Logistics FAQ
How to get to Capri (ferry and hydrofoil) and get around on the island (bus, taxi, foot) once you're there
How do I get the ferry to Capri?
Capri is an island, so the only way to get here is by boat—either a slower traghetto (ferry), a faster Nave Veloce, or the fastest aliscafo/Jet (hydrofoil). The faster the boat, the higher the ticket price (ferries cost a bit more than half as much as hydrofoils). The ride takes anywhere from 20 min to 1 hr. 15 min and and costs from €9 to €17—depending on the speed and the point of departure (details below).
Useful Italian
ferry - traghetto
fast ferry - nave veloce
hydrofoil - aliscafo
ticket - biglietto
one way - solo andata
round-trip - andata e ritorno
timetable - orario

pier - molo
port - marina
There are several ferry companies and consortiums connecting Capri to Naples and Capri to Sorrento, as well as various other stops around the Naples Bay area (including, some summers, Amalfi and Positano; check the resources below for timetables and prices—though I've found the most realiable service between Capri and Positano from www.lucibello.it):
- GESCAB - Consorzio LMP (tel. +39-081-551-3236 in Naples, tel. +39-081-837-6995 on Capri, tel. +39-081-878-1430 in Sorrento, tel. +39-089-811-986 in Positano, tel. +39-089-873-301 in Amalfi; www.consorziolmp.it) - Represents five ferry lines (though the website is a bit buggy, so it might pay to visit the ferry lines individually: www.navlib.it, www.alilauro.it, www.snav.it, www.volaviamare.it, www.alilaurogruson.it)
- Caremar (tel. +39-081-551-3882 in Naples, tel. +39-081-837-0700 on Capri, tel. +39-807-3077 in Sorrento; www.caremar.it) - The only one that operates the slower traghetti (ferries) and the mid-speed nave veloce (fast ferries).
- Metro del Mare (tel. +39-199-600-700; www.metrodelmare.com)
Since you probably don't care which company you use (you just want a convenient departure time at the lowest ticket price), check many at once on the Capri tourism website (www.capritourism.com)—which conveniently lists all departures, in order, along with the companies and ticket prices for better comparison shopping.
How to get to Capri from Naples
- The traghetto (ferry) from Naples to Capri takes 1 hr. 15 min. and costs €9–€10.
- The nave veloce (fast ferry) from Naples to Capri takes 50 min. and costs €14.50.
- The aliscafo (hydrofoil) from Naples to Capri takes 45 min. and costs €17.
Service is roughly hourly (though with several competing lines, you rarely have to wait more than 30 minutes for the next boat).
Lines that service this route: www.caremar.it, www.snav.it, www.navlib.it, www.consorziolmp.it.
Most boats leave from Naples' Beverello docks. To get there, first purchase a biglietto tram (tram ticket) from any newsstand in Naples Stazione Centrale train station, then exit the station, angle a bit left to cross the bus-choked Piazza Garibaldi out front to the far side where you'll find the stops for tram #1 and bus R2, either of which will get you to the Molo Beverello (ask the driver "Molo Beverello?" and he'll let you know when to get off; he's used to us tourists).
On the tram #1, it will swming alongside the port past manny docks before arriving at Molo Beverello (which is located where the portside boulevard changes names from Via C. Colombo to Via Acton, right in front of the imposing Castel Nuovo castle). On the R2, get off in Piazza Municipio and walk around the Castel Nuovo to the docks.
Beware of pickpockets the entire way (in the station, in the piazza, on the tram, and even on the boat).
The slower traghetto and nave veloce ferries leave from the Calata Porta di Massa.
Hint: If you're just going to show up at the docks (rather than using the sites listed above to research it ahead of time), rather than visiting each ferry and hydrofoil company's dock office at Naples' Molo Beverello to find out which one has the next boat out, use the central clearing house. Just to the left of the driveway into the dock area is Ontano Tours (tel. +39-081-580-0340), a travel agency that will book you on the next ferry or hydrofoil out, tell you which lines it is, and sell you a voucher that you then carry to that line's dock office to trade in for a ticket—all at no extra cost.
How to get to Capri from Sorrento
- The nave veloce (fast ferry) from Sorrento to Capri takes 25 min. and costs €9–€10.
- The aliscafo (hydrofoil) from Sorrento to Capri takes 20–25 min. and costs €14.50.
Service is roughly hourly (though with several competing lines, you rarely have to wait more than 30 minutes for the next boat).
Lines that service this route: www.caremar.it, www.consorziolmp.it, www.alilauro.it.
All boats leave from the Marina Piccola below Sorrento (take minibus B of C from Piazza Tasso in the center of town.)
How to get around on Capri
Capri has a funicular from the Marina Grande docks up to Capri Town, and a small fleet of minibuses. Otherwise, it's all on foot or by the big, open taxis.
When you arrive at Marina Grande and get to the base of the dock, straight ahead to the left is a funicular up to Capri. Head up the hill to the right for the bus stop.
The Capri Funicular
There is a funicolare (funicular; cable car) from the Marina Grande docks up the Capri Town which saves the wait for the bus. It runs every 15 minutes and costs €1.40. For more info: tel. +39-081-837-0420.
Capri by Bus
Rides on Capri's miniature orange buses cost €1.40...when they bother collecting your money (to get on at Capri town's main depot, buy a ticket at the window—and for some insanse reason, it costs €1.50 to go to Marina Grande; on any other ride you just pay the driver).
At Marina Grande: For buses to Capri (also every 15 min.) and Anacapri (at least once an hour), turn right at the dock's end to walk 200 feet up to the turnabout in the road.
In Capri Town: There are bus connections between Capri town's depot on Piazza Martiri d'Ungheria and: Anacapri (every 5–15 min.), Marina Grande (every 15 min.), and Marina Piccola (every 30 min.). For more information: tel. +39-081-837-0420.
In Anacapri: the buses for Marina Grande (every 30–50 min.), Marina Piccola (at 10:05am), and Capri town (every 5–15 min.) leave from Piazza Caprile, passing through Piazza Vittoria. The depot for Anacapri's buses to the Blue Grotto and those to the Faro swimming hole (both every 20 min.) is on Via de Tommaso. For more information: tel. +39-081-837-2422.
Taxis on Capri
Taxis congregate wherever tourists do. You can often bargain, but to go anywhere usually costs about €20.
There are stands in Capri on Piazza Martiri d'Ungheria, Anacapri on Piazza Vittoria, and at the docks of Marina Grande and Marina Piccola.
You can also call for a taxi in Capri at tel. +39-081-837-0543; in Anacapri at tel. +39-081-837-1175.
Capri on Foot
Capri has some gorgeous walks (I describe the best here), but most have a significant grade to them.
I wouldn't recommend the steep, uphill hike from Capri to Anacapri—although the reverse is doable in about half an hour, if you don't mind a little vertigo and walking primarily on the nonexistent shoulder of the main road (the Greek-era Scala Fenicia stairs connecting Marina Grande and Anacapri are in such bad repair they've been closed).
From Capri, you can easily stroll down to Marina Grande in about 15 min, to Marina Piccola in 20 min.
From Anacapri, you can reach the Faro in 20 min or the Blue Grotto in half an hour.
