During their courtship, the future Rino and Lilly Adamo had one of those singularly memorable meals in a tiny, friendly, old-fashioned osteria of a dozen wooden tables with high back straw-seated chairs set on the terra-cotta floors of a pair of tiny rooms. They decided on the spot that one day, they'd open a place of their own just like it, and thus the Canterbury was born.

Its name is apt, since it's cozy in a vaguely British manner: close tables set with flowers, a modest chandelier, dark wood cupboards, little curtains.

Trust your waiter's advice implicitly. Perhaps he'll suggest starting with paccheri con coccio (wide pasta loops in a light sauce of baby tomatoes and local fish) or maccheroni di casa Canterbury (pasta with tomatoes, cheese, and eggplant).

Move on to no-nonsense secondi like agnello alla brace (grilled lamb) or petto di pollo in vino bianco (chicken breast cooked in white wine), and definitely cap it all off with the tiramisù made in house.
