Galleria Umberto I in NaplesThis early shopping mall—modeled on Milan's galleria—was built as part of Naples' urban renewal scheme following a cholera epidemic of 1884. The massive glass and iron-frame barrel vaults of its four wings and central dome soar some 187 feet above the inlaid marble flooring.

Shops and cafes line the ground floor, offices the three stories above. It had to be largely rebuilt after World War II bomb damage, and is no longer quite the fashionable society rendezvous it once was, but the huge space at the center still makes an ideal soccer field for Neapolitan kids.
