Battelli di Roma Tiber river cruise in front of St. Peter's.After more than a century of pretty much ignoring the Tiber (building high embankments seems to doom all urban rivers to such mental neglect), Rome now has a river cruising service like those in Paris and London.
It's called Battelli di Roma (www.battellidiroma.it), and since 2003 has run up and down the Tiber River (Fiume Tevere) in a loop from Isola Tiburtina (Tiber Island) to the Ponte Duca d'Aosta bridge.
The main embarkation point is Ponte Sant'Angelo, in the middle of the route, across the river from Castel Sant'Angelo, just a few yards upriver from the bridge itself—more specifically, along the Lungotevere Tor di Nona between where Via del Mastro and Via della Rondinella hit it.
There's another stop across from Tiber Island (on the southern, Trastevere bank), on the Lungotevere degli Anguillara between Ponte Garibaldi and Ponte Cestia.
The Tiber cruises
Battelli di Roma offers four standard crociere (cruises) along the Tevere:
- Hop-on hop-off: A cruise up and down the river in a one-hour loop with recorded info on what you're passing in seven languages. You can get on and off as often as you'd like over a 24-hour period. It costs €15.
- Bus and Boat: Same as the hop-on hop-off service, but you can also make use (for 48 hours) of a tourist bus—one of those double-decker with an open top that makes the rounds of the major sights. Best of both worlds; costs €32.
- Wine bar: A two-hour-plus cruises with wine, cheeses, salami and prosciutto, and a dessert leaving the Ponte Sant'Angelo stop Thursdays through Saturdays at 9pm. It costs €35.
- Dinner cruise: A two-hour-plus cruise with music and dinner that leaves from the Ponte Sant'Angelo stop at 9pm (arrive 15 minutes early). It runs Fridays and Saturdays year-round, plus Thursdays in summer (Mar 15–Nov 15). Reservations are required. It costs €54.
In summer, other offers are often put on board, like weekend cruises all the way down the Tiber to the ruins of Ostia Antica. Check the website for details.
