A barrel-vaulted ceiling of hand-cast bricks and spinning fans arches over this endlessly popular trattoria nestled amid the cheap hotels near the train station.
Ancient wine bottles, garlands of garlic, frankly frightening old farm implements, and framed place mats with artistic doodles line the walls above the marble-topped tables and straw-bottomed chairs.
Steaks come, not on a plate, but on a cutting board, and unusually all main courses include a free side dish (usually roast potatoes or boiled spinach).
They don't even charge for service, just a cover charge—and even that is waived if you choose the inexpensive menu turistico.
With the menu turistico, you get a choice among about ten primi (tortellini in broth, pennette in tomato sauce, or one of Tuscany's storied stew-like soups such as ribollita vegetable or pappa al pomodoro tomato) and an equal number of secondi (veal piccata with lemon or under tomato sauce, Florentine tripe stewed with tomatoes and sage—just steer clear of the dry and tasteless grilled chicken), plus a dessert of fruit macedonia or gelato and wine or water.
The food's not particularly outstanding, but its the closest you can get to a true restaurant experience for under $20.
