Planning FAQ
Lucca's best hotels are all small, family-run affairs.

Piccolo Hotel Puccini - Book ahead to guarantee a room at the excellent Piccolo Hotel Puccini run by the wonderfully helpful Paolo just a block from central Piazza San Michele. Small but well-tended rooms in a perfect location. My favorite place in town. Via di Poggio 9, tel. +39-0583-55-421, www.hotelpuccini.com. Doubles €95. Online from €60.

Hotel Universo - The Hotel Universo is a wonderfully creaky old grand dame of a hotel in a palazzo built in 1500 on a piazza by the city's 17th century opera house and theater (plenty of stars and entertainers have stayed; jazz great Chet Baker was fond of room 15). It sports some lovely views of the town's church facades and towers just a few quiet blocks' stroll south of the central square. Rooms are comfy and simple, with standardized amenities. This place is clearly long past its heyday—but that translates into getting the echoes of genteel 19th-century style at astoundingly low prices. Piazza del Giglio 1, tel. +39-0583-493-678, www.universolucca.com. Doubles €59–€189; from €59 online.

Hotel La Luna - On a pocket-sized piazza just off Via Fillungo, close to Piazza Anfiteatro, sits the small (29 rooms) and amiable La Luna, where 17th century frescoes decorate a few of the otherwise contemporary rooms. It's family-run and occupies a palazzo built around 1200—though fully renovated in 2003, giving two of the rooms Jacuzzi tubs. Corte Compagni 12/Via Fillungo, tel. +39-0583-493-634, www.hotellaluna.com. Doubles €110–€140; from €90 online.
Hotel Diana - Cheapest of the lot, half a block from the Duomo near the city's southern walls, simple little Albergo Diana is divided into the main hotel (€55–€65) and a slightly more luxurious, more expensive "Dependance" annex (€75–€85). Wonderfully inexpensive, though achingly plain—and it should be noted that I've always found the staff to be rather surly. Via del Molinetto 11, tel. +39-0583-492-202, www.albergodiana.com, Doubles €65–€85. From €56 online.
