There’s no better way to bring a city’s culture and history to life than through a professional guide’s anecdotes, character sketches, jokes, and tons of background details. And the easiest (and cheapest) way to get one is to sign up for a guided walking tour.

Guided specialty walking tours can run the gamut from a short walking tour with gondola ride to a private tour of the art & architecture of Venice to a four-hour photography tour at prices ranging from €20 to €150.

The Venice tourist office (tel. +39-041-529-8711; www.turismovenezia.it) offers several tours, from a basic two-hour tour of the historic center and it monuments (€35; in English: daily at 9:15; meet at the old San Marco tourist office) to tours of Venetian Legends in Castello and Cannaregio (€20; in English: Mon., Tues., Thurs., and Sat. at 5pm; meet at Campo S. Bartolomeo), the Gardens of Venice (€10; in English Tues. at 11am; meet at the Giardini Papadopoli on Piazzale Roma), the Spicy Venice of Casanova and his fellow 18th century libertines (€20; in English Fri. and Sat. at 11am; meet at the top of Rialto Bridge), and others.

ReidsItaly.com has partnered with Viator (www.viator.com) which provides a variety of walking tours you can sign up for ahead of time (there are direct links to a few below), as well as advance booking for skip-the-line tickets to major sights like St. Mark's Basilica or the highly recommended Secret Itineraries tour of the Doge's Palace.
