Stop At: Cinque Terre Trails, Cinque Terre, Italian Riviera, Liguria
These ancient trails are rough but manageable. Be prepared for the hiking although the path is open to everyone, remember that the ground can be slippery, uneven, and in places steep and narrow. The charm of the area is that it is natural and unspoiled, do not expect hand rails or safety rails when steps are steep or when the path is close to the cliff edge. Because of the nature of the hike, we are unable to accept small children or anyone with walking difficulties.
Duration: 8 hours
Stop At: Borgo Storico di Riomaggiore, Riomaggiore, Cinque Terre, Italian Riviera, Liguria
At Riomaggiore, centuries ago, the distinctive tall, colourful houses known as Genovese tower houses arranged in rows connected by alleys, arches and steps provided a defense against pirates.
House colours are regulated by the comune. You can't just paint them any colour you like!
Houses have two entrances, one at the front and one at the rear on the higher road, so that when they were attacked by pirates, the people could escape.
At the end of the eighteen hundreds the railway came along the coast and Riomaggiore, along with the other towns of the cinque terrre came out of their historic isolation, even though a road wouldn't reach them until the 1970's.
Language, lingua ligure, the villages were so cut off even from each other that they spoke different dialects of the same language.

Stop At: Borgo Storico di Manarola, Manarola, Cinque Terre, Italian Riviera, Liguria
Built in the valley of the torrente Groppo, until 1950 the stream which runs through the town was completely uncovered and 11 stone bridges allowed the people to cross from one side to the other. Over the next thirty years the stream was gradually covered over.
The ancient village was destroyed by Saracen pirates (in 849) and the surviving people fled in land to live. When the seas were made safe again in the 11th century, people came back to settle here under the protection of the Republic of Genova.
By the 1200's cultivation of vines was not only established but the wine they produced was sought after. The church of San Lorenzo was begun in 1338. The patron saint is celebrated on the 10th of August with a procession through the streets carrying a statue of him.
The castle which protected the town from pirates is now a private home, you can see the garden from the panoramic walk, it is on the rock immediately above the port.
Manarola is now famous for its Christmas nativity scene which is the biggest in the world. Figures outlined in thousands of lights cover the hillside. Also an Easter scene is made.

Stop At: Borgo Storico di Corniglia, Corniglia, Cinque Terre, Italian Riviera, Liguria
The middle town of the five, Corniglia is the smallest town and sits at 90 metres above sea level.
The name derives from the huge spur of rock on which the village sits. Population of about only 200.
San Pietro church from the fourteenth century on the site of an eleventh century chapel. San Pietro's day is 29th June and as part of the celebrations, there is a procession through the streets. A special savoury tart is prepared with rice, eggs and cheese and is shared among the people who take part in the procession.
Duration: 1 hour
Stop At: Vernazza, Vernazza, Cinque Terre, Italian Riviera, Liguria
Vernazza is unique in the Cinque Terre because of the small port that was built allowing ships to land in the protected bay. It was already a fortified village and efficient maritime base in the earliest records available from the eleventh century. Today there are traces of the military defences built by the Genovese in the thirteenth century such as traces of the old walls, ramparts and the look out tower.

Stop At: Footpath Monterosso - Vernazza, Monterosso al Mare, Cinque Terre, Italian Riviera, Liguria
Right before lunch time you catch the train to Monterosso al Mare, the biggest of the five villages, where you will have time to explore and visit the beaches dotted along the coast. Despite the number of tourists, there is still a real sense of local identity even in the most tourist-crammed little piazze'. Restaurants, bars and accommodation all have an endearingly homespun air about them as though when the locals saw tourists coming, they found a few garden chairs to stick on their terrace, hand painted a sign and began serving customers.

Stop At: Cinque Terre Italy
The Italian Riviera is the narrow coastal strip which lies between the Ligurian Sea, and mountain chain formed by the Maritime Alps and the Apennines. Famous for its particularly mild climate and the beauty of its landscape, the Italian Riviera has long been a popular tourist destination.
Along its coast lie many old fishing villages, whose charms have attracted many to the region. One group of such villages is particularly popular, the Cinque Terre, the Five Lands, a portion of coast, which over the centuries has had terraces built on the rugged, steep landscape that even extend up to the cliffs that overlook the sea.
The Cinque Terre has a notable lack of modern development, which has resulted in a truly spectacular landscape, the fishing villages blending in perfectly with the luscious vegetation and stunning blue sea.
Your escort/guide will be glad to suggest suitable places for lunch. Seafood is plentiful in the local cuisine, given its location on the Mediterranean, and the Anchovies of Monterosso, a local speciality, are even designated with a Protection Designation of Origin status from the European Union.
Your tour will begin on a panoramic drive to the first town of Manarola, where your profesional escort will provide a lovely guided walking tour of the small town, after this, you will have the opportuninty for some free time to enjoy the town at your own leisure.
From here you will then take the train from Manarola to Vernazza where your escort will inform you all of the facts about this beautiful, colourful town. Then you will get the chance to have some free time around Vernazza for approximately 45 minutes.
After you have explored the beautiful town, you will then move on to the stunning Monterosso, here you guide will explain to you the best sights and things to do in your free time here. You will get to indulge the best sights of Monterosse at your own pace, once you have experienced the beauty of the towns, you will then make your way back to Levanto (Train Station) where you will head back to the coach, from here you will have a lovely panoramic drive back to the port in plenty of time for your cruise ships departure.

• Private Boat Tour of the Cinque Terre Coastline
Nestled between sea and mountains and founded in ancient times by natives seeking refuge from barbarian invaders, the towns of the Cinque Terre have been isolated from the rest of Italy for centuries. Because of this and the area's dramatic coastal scenery, the Cinque Terre have become ever more attractive to modern visitors to Italy, and are an ideal alternative for those seeking an unusual shore experience. Along with your guide, you will take the local train to the closest of the five villages, Riomaggiore. Youll walk along the panoramic footpath (paved) that leads from the new to the old part of the village and from where have a view of the famed path, the"Via dell'Amore". Youll visit the town itself, enter the church of St. John the Baptist, one of the most important religious edifices in Cinque Terre and enjoy the main street with its colorful shops and cafes. From there youll take the local train to Vernazza, known as the pearl of the Cinque Terre for its picturesque view from every angle. Your guide will take you through the maze of back streets and the pretty pastel-colored squares. The region is famous for its pesto sauce and a pesto-making demonstration awaits you as well as a sumptuous lunch at a selected restaurant. Youll then experience once of the most beautiful coastlines in Italy as you take a private boat from Monterosso back to Riomaggiore. You'll admire the five villages clinging to their cliffs, the terraces for farming grapes and olives, and the grottoes that dot the bottom of the cliffs as they meet the water. An hour or so into your journey, Riomaggiore, the southernmost town of the Cinque Terre and your starting point will come into view. Your guide will then accompany you back to your driver who will take you to your cruise ship in time for your departure.

When entering this region of Italy, things can seem a little surreal. The houses are painted in vivid multi-coloured shades, the sea is brighter than the sky and the sun rains down so heavily that everything seems a little technicoloured — welcome to the Cinque Terre.
Describing it as a gem of Italy is totally correct, but to be more specific, it would have to be an opal— a play of colours, mainly reflected by the blue of the sea, dotted with gold, pink and green houses.
This is a rare jewel that changes with the light of the day, and is best explored on foot, by bike or by kayak to truly understand the natural beauty of this precious treasure.

- Viator.com - Best one-stop shopping site for all sorts of activities, walking tours, bus tours, escorted day trips, and other excursions. It is actually a clearinghouse for many local tour companies and outfitters, and since it gets a bulk-rate deal on pricing (and takes only a token fee for itself), you can actually sometimes book an activity through Viator for less than it would cost to buy the same exact tour from the tour company itself. (I once booked a Dublin pub crawl via Viator and later discovered that I saved about $1.50; also, the tour turned out to be sold-out, and they were turning away the folks in front of me in line, but since I had a pre-booked voucher I got in.)Partner
- Veltra.com - Chief rival to Viator, representing fewer tours but also offering some you won't find on Viator.Partner
- Freewalkingtouritalia.com - Basic walking tours that cost... "name your own price." The guides work for "tips," much of which is turned over to their boss, so you end up "tipping" them €15 to €20 per person anyway, meaning the tours aren't actually free (though, given their incentive, most guides put on a good show and give a good tour) .
