[From our partners at Context Travel:] Mosaic is an art form that has a long history in the Campania region around Naples, dating from the Greek period and blossoming during the age of the Roman Empire.
During this hands-on workshop, visitors learn this ancient art in the company of a professor of medieval art and critically-acclaimed mosaic artist.
This is a fun, immersive experience in which participants learn not only about the history and aesthetics of mosaics, but the actual technique of making one.
This program takes place in the artist's studio, set in the lovely countryside of Salerno, very close to the famed Amalfi Coast and looking out over the bright blue Mediterranean.
We begin with an introduction to the medium of mosaic and its ancient roots. Then, the hands-on experience begins with sketching the design of the mosaic and the choosing of the tesserae, the colored tiles that make up the mosaic panel.
We'll learn, in the course of our time together, how mosaic was used in both decorative and practical modes in antiquity—from the floral and geometric motifs in private homes to religious imagery of god and protectors in shrines.
Drawing on examples from the ruins of cities like Pompeii and Herculaneum, which thankfully preserve much of their rich collection of period mosaics in Naples’ Archaeological Museum, our docent will focus on how mosaics related to daily life in antiquity, a subject of her research.
At the end, we'll each emerge with a much better understanding of mosaic art from both a historical and practical perspective, which will allow for a deeper knowledge and appreciation of this fascinating and delicate art. We'll also walk away with our own mosaic masterpiece.
