Hotel Villa Augustus

A classy hotel in the 19th century villa in the main town of Lipari, the capital of the Aeolian Islands of Sicily

Beyond gardens of splashing fountains, shady arbors, and palms and flowers galore you'll come across the old-fashioned Villa Augustus. It's run by Dottore Augusto d'Albora, whose namesake grandfather the Principe d'Albora turned this 19th-century mill-cum–family villa into a 35-room hotel in the 1950s.

Some of the rooms downstairs in the main building are done in a fresh Liberty style, but accommodations upstairs and those in the modern wings tucked away in the gardens have a classic Mediterranean simplicity—whitewashed arches and cool ceramic floors that are little disturbed by the functional furnishings and baths.

Most rooms have balconies looking over the town and castello or mountainous island interior, although a few open onto the gardens.
