The ultimate sandwich shop in Palermo, Sicily

This Palermitano institution has been stuffing customers with stuffed focaccia sandwiches and other cheap eats since 1834 in a high-ceilinged, marble-floored space that resembles nothing so much as an old-fashioned train station waiting room. (In warm weather you can also eat at tables on the tiny piazza outside.)

A huge central counter proudly displays trays of deep-dish focaccie fresh from the oven and a bubbling cauldron of steaming milza (spleen).

Regulars usually order a beer and two dishes each, the most popular being arancie (giant fried rice balls filled with ragù, peas, and cheese) and split, stuffed focaccie, best served maritata (with spleen, heart, ricotta, and hard caciocavallo cheese), schietta (with ricotta and hard caciocavallo cheese), or con panelle (with chickpea fritters).
