Ostello Archi Rossi

A room at the Archi Rossi Hostel, Florence

The best and most central hostel in Florence

The official HI hostel in Florence is waaaay out on the edge of town. That's why I prefer the Archi Rossi.

It's right on Florence's main drag of cheap hotels near the train station, making it for a far more central and fantastic value.

Bunks in shared dorms sleeping 4–6 (some mixed, some female only) cost €18–€23 per person.

Private rooms (sleeping 3–5) start at €55.

Plus, the walls of the public areas are slathered with shockingly bad murals. Plus there's a garden.

The Archi Rossi is not quite as nice as the staid Istituto Gould across the Arno (another good hostel choice)—but it's a lot more fun, is closer to the major sights, and comes loaded with freebies.

The Archi Rossi hotel offers free Internet (with public computers not only in the lobby but in the rooms) and free WiFi 24/7.

Want more? How about FREE FOOD! Yes, there is a free breakfast, including omlettes and scrambled eggs. In the off season (Dec. 29–Mar 31) they sometimes even lay out free pasta, pizza, and salad from 6pm to 8:30pm on every day but Saturday.

They even run free walking tours of Florence from 10am to noon—the tour covers the historic center one day, the Oltrarno the next.

They've even eliminated the old curfew (which once nearly caught me out late and caused me to cut short a dinner with a bona fide princess, but that's another story...). There is, however, still a cleaning lock-out period of the rooms daily from 10am to 2:30pm.
