Pizzeria A Oche in VeniceThis Venetian pizza parlor is far enough from the tourist centers—about halfway between Campo S. Polo and the train station—that the clientele is still largely Venetians (heavy on the students).

They pack this perennially popular pizzeria (and its few outdoor tables), which is done up as a sort of ersatz U.S. roadhouse: rock music playing softly, the rough-planked walls painted with peeling old sports team logos, classic American signs from the era when Pepsi cost 5¢, and a large map of Yosemite.

It's a great place to grab a filling meal of beer and pizza—with 93 kinds of pizza from which to choose—for under $15 (pizzas start at just €4.50). They also offer a fuller menu of simple dishes, such as fusilli in tomato and basil sauce, or grilled chicken breast with spinach.

It has been such a success, they have started a mini pizza empire, with 10 locations across the Veneto, including two others here in Venice: A branch in Dorsoduro at Fondamente Zattere 1414 (tel. +39-041-520-6601) which has more of a converted-industrial vibe and a lofted sitting area and tables out front overlooking the Giudecca across the broad canal; and a Cannaregio branch at S. Lucia 158A just off the Lista di Spagna (tel. +39-041-717-879), a simple modernist spot just two blocks from the train station.
