» THE VENICE BOOKSHELF

A long block north of the chic Riva degli Schiavoni hotels lies one of Venice's best wine bars, expanded to include an elbow-to-elbow trattoria/pizzeria in back. Though on a street busy with tourist traffic, this remains a locals' joint, where Venetians like to take out of town visitors.

Its name refers to the toothpick-speared marinated anchovies that join other cicchetti lining the popular front bar, where you can enjoy an excellent wine selection of Veneto and Italian wines by the glass.

The staff is relaxed about those not ordering full multiple-course meals—a pasta and glass of wine or pizza and beer will keep anyone happy. There's an unusually long list of half bottles of wine and an even more unusual nonsmoking room. Tables move out onto the small piazza when the warm weather moves in.
