Take a cruise down the Brenta Canal, past some 30 of the fabulous Ville Venete, a Renaissance and baroque Hamptons for 17th century Venetian bigwigs who could afford to hire Palladio or one of his imitators to build them a summer home, and painterly types like Tiepolo to fresco them. Most cruises last all day, and stop to tour three or four of the major palazzi and gardens.

I promise to write more soon about this fun day from Venice (last time I did it, we got wonderfully held up at a lock by a historical regatta of old boats bearing Carnival-costumed characters, from courtiers and Casanovas right up to the Doge himself), but for now, here are the main companies that do the trip:
