Sumptuous lodgings at Verona's top five-star hotel

Verona's top five-star hotel occupies a 14th-century palazzo that was reopened in the 1950s.

The Hotel Due Torri where rock stars and opera singers stay when they play in town, picking up where Mozart, Goethe, and Garibaldi left off—perhaps because they're among the few who can afford it. (Most rack rates start above €300—though you can find rooms online for closer to €220.)

The airy lobby looks like a stage set, with original 1370s columns and carvings and contemporary frescoes of medieval scenes, the ceilings set with oil paintings.

Furnishings in the 90 guest rooms range from Louis XIV to Biedermeier, and even standard rooms are luxurious, with patterned wall coverings, Murano chandeliers, and large, marble-sheathed bathrooms with double sinks.

Windows are double-paned, so even on the piazza things are quiet.

More recently, a roof terrace was installed—the hotel is up in the narrow end of Verona formed by the tight river bend, so many rooms, especially on the third floor, have great views over rooftops to the hills beyond.
