A family-run trattoria in Taormina, Sicily

Friendly Sebastiano Puglia and his son Daneile really care about his simple, tasty dishes.

There are only a dozen small tables scattered on the patio out front, shaded by an awning dripping with flowers, so call ahead if you want one.

The only drawback is the cars that whiz by occasionally—but in between the sole sound is birdsong from the public gardens across the street.

The spaghetti alla carbonara is great, as is the paglia e fieno alla bolognese (strands of green and yellow pasta tossed with a ragù).

For secondo I recommend the omlette al prosciutto and involtini alla rusticana (veal rolls stuffed with cheese and skewered with lemon slices and Sicilian sausages before being grilled).
