A hidden restaurant in Taormina, Sicily

La Botte is a bit more expensive than it should be, but the setting's terrific—either in stuccoed rooms lined with photos of noted patrons or in nice weather under umbrellas on a quiet, breezy little piazza off Taormina's beaten passeggiata path.

(From the east end of Piazza S. Caterina, take the little street parallel to and sunk below the right of the road to the Greek theater).

Their antipasto buffet is a prodigious spread, and one of La Botte's main draws—that and quite good pizza to be washed down with Messina beer. Pasta fresca al cuore di carciofo (homemade pasta with artichoke hearts), maccheroni alla Norma, and zuppa di cozze are all good ways to round out the menu.
