Hotel Villa Fiorita

A moderately-priced hotel with gardens and sea views in Taormina, Sicily

The Fiorita isn't bad, and it has all the amenities at reasonable rates, but frankly it lacks the charm of the other properties listed on this site.

It's built into a sloping cliffside, with gardens that clamber up the hillside to a swimming pool, passing small sunning terraces with views of the coast.

The decor is lodged between the 19th century and the 1960s, with furniture combinations of ugly modular and fine antique. Most doubles stick to functionality; you've got to cough up for the suites with kitchenette to get the classier furnishings.

Still, all rooms have big ol' comfy easy chairs and beds so firm you could bounce a coin off them.

Since all rooms have the same price, insist on a sea-view or go elsewhere.

The staff can be brusque and prickly, and the smallish baths could use an overhaul, but at least prices don't skyrocket in summer.
