The fascinating marionette museum in Palermo

I know what you're thinking, but this place is actually pretty cool—and well worth visiting.

It is one of the world's largest collections of puppets, documenting a cultural and artistic craft heritage that spans the globe from Javanese stick puppets, Indonesian silhouettes, and Chinese dolls to Neapolitan Pulcinella (Punch and Judy) hand puppets and, of course, Sicilian marionettes—many displayed against original stages and backgrounds.

Marionette shows were the theater of Sicily's common folk over the past few centuries, telling tales of Charlemagne and the adventures of his knights, as well as swashbuckling Saracen pirate stories and even opera.
