The remains and mosaics of the Roman-era town of Agrigento

Across the street from the museum is the Insula Romana, or Quartiere Ellenistico-Romana (Roman-Hellenistic Quarter).

It consists of several square blocks of the Roman city that thrived here from the 2nd century BC to the 4th century AD.

It's mostly a floor plan-type outline of excavated low stone walls spiked by the occasional run of re-erected columns, but there are some quite peachy polychrome floor mosaics protected under those scattered glass huts you see.

How to get to the temples from Agrigento

City buses 1, 1/, 2, 2/, 3, and 3/ run from in front of the train station down Via dei Templi into the Valley of the Temples. You can get off at the Museum/Insula Romana or stay on all the way to the Posto di Ristoro, a pricey cafe/souvenir stand at the entrances to the two temple zones.

For a taxi, call tel. +39-0922-26-670 or 0922-21-899. A trip from town down to the temples should be about €15.

Stick to the temples

If your time is limited, just hit the temples. There's nothing of consequence to see in the city itself.
