» THE VENICE BOOKSHELF
Hotels aren't your only lodging options in Venice. In fact, hotels are often the most expensive options available, yet rarely are the most fun or remarkable. For a more memorable trip, you might want to try an alternative accommodation that (usually) costs less and (usually) affords you a better a chance to get closer to the local people and culture.
In Venice, I've camped by the beach on the Venetian lagoon, rented apartments around the corner from St. Mark's Cathedral where I was soon recognized as a local at the area shops, and had a bunk surrounded by Renaissance frescoes in a former monastery turned into a religious hospice and hostel.
Then there are B&Bs, residence hotels... plenty of amazing (and amazingly cheap) places to spend the night.
