Pensione delle Rose [€€] is a stuffy old seven-room pensione up above the new town, a bit removed from the city but more tranquil for it—and a 15-minute hike uphill from the center. The squeaky clean rooms are spacious, with squishy beds and functional furnishings. Nos. 8–10 are great for families, with an extra room with 2 beds. They'll provide a TV upon request if you tire of the vista across the city to the bulk of the rocca rising beyond (front rooms get the best view). For an old-fashioned family pensione and cheap rooms just outside the old town, book way ahead at the Locanda Cangelosi [€]—in summer they get 20 or more requests daily for their 4 rooms sharing a bath. Via Umberto I 26. tel. +39-0921-421-591, www.locandacangelosi.it.
