• Planning FAQHemmed in between a towering headland of a mountain and a naturally sheltered harbor, Cefalù is a small, orderly city and a relaxing place to unwind.
It has no cars in the historic center, a friendly passeggiata, some of Sicily's best Byzantine mosaics, and a sweeping curve of fine beach that has recently attracted some modest resort hotels and expanded the city westward.
The 5th-century BC Greeks left a few vases for the museum, and Roger II and his Normans gave the town a mighty cathedral that draws the tourists and gives us a viable excuse for cooling our heels here for a day or two.
Planning your trip to Cefalù
- Planning your time: Though relentless sightseers will be hard-pressed to fill more than a half day, Cefalù has a nice, easygoing vibe that makes it well worth planning to spend an overnight and see the town at a leisurely pace (especially if you plan to climb the headland).
- How to get to Cefalù by car:
Cefalù is about halfway along the north coast of Sicily on the main A20 highway. It is 165km (102 miles) west of Messina and 70km (43 miles) east of Palermo.
The A20 highway from Messina is incomplete for a 46km (28-mile) stretch from S. Agata to the Castelbuono exit near coastal Sant'Ambrogio, so you'll have to drop to the parallel old coastal SS113. (Expect traffic.) Coming from the other direction (Palermo), though, the A20 is complete.
- Tourist Information: The tourist office is at Corso Ruggiero 77 (tel. +39-0921-421-050, www.comune.cefalu.pa.it and the buggy www.cefalu-tour.pa.it), open Monday to Saturday 8am to 2pm and 3:30 to 8:30pm. Also useful is the private site www.cefalu.it.
There are also info booths at the train station and on Piazza Garibaldi open Monday to Saturday 9am to 1pm and 5:30pm to 9pm (in winter, they may have shorter evening hours or close altogether).
