Arriving in Trapani by train, car, plane, and bus

Trapani is the main city on the west coast of Sicily, right at the triangular island's northwesternmost tip. It is well-served by trains and buses and has its own small airport for domestic flights (also handy for flying to the island of Pantelleria).

How to get to Trapani by Train: There are 8-9 trains daily from Palermo (2-4 hr.).

  • How to get to Trapani by Bus: There's an AST bus (tel. 0923-21-021) from Erice at least every two hours (40 min.). Segesta (tel. +39-0923-20-066) runs 25 buses daily from Palermo (TK). Lumia (tel. +39-0922-20-414) runs 4 buses (2 Sunday) from Agrigento (3-4 hr.).
  • How to get to Trapani by Car: Take the A29 from Palermo, diverging onto the A29dir toward Trapani after you veer away from Castellammare del Golfo. From Erice, follow the signs for the scenic, winding road down.
  • How to get to Trapani from the Palermo airport: Etna Trasporti (tel. +39-0923-28-404, www.etnatrasporti.it). Twice daily (from the Palermo airport: 12:30pm and 6:30pm; from Trapani: 11:55am and 5:55pm). 70 min. €9.60.

The tiny Aeroporto di Trapani Birgi "Vincenzo Florio" (tel. +39-0923-842-502; www.airgest.it) is about halfway between Trapani (18km) and Marsala (16km) along the SP21 highway off the A29 autostrada.

It is served almost exclusively by low-cost Ryanair flights, mostly from other cities in Italy plus a smattering across Europe (London-Luton, Paris-Beauvais, Stockholm, Barcelona-Girona, Malta, Monaco, Frankfurt , Brussels).

It's also handy as the place to catch Meridiana fly flights to the Italian island of Pantelleria.

How to get between DOWNTOWN TRAPANI and the Trapani airport

AST buses (tel. +39-0923-21-021; www.aziendasicilianatrasporti.it) runs hourly buses between the airport and the downtown Trapani (bus stop by the port) in 45 min.

How to get between PALERMO and the Trapani airport

Salemi (tel. +39-0923-981-120; www.autoservizisalemi.it) runs eight buses daily Monday to Friday (6 on Saturdays and Sundays) between Piazza Cairoli in Palermo and the Birgi Airport in Trapani. The ride takes about 2–2.5 hours.

How to get between MARSALA and the Trapani airport

Salemi (tel. +39-0923-981-120; www.autoservizisalemi.it) runs seven buses daily Monday to Friday (5 on Saturdays and Sundays) between Marsala and the Birgi Airport in Trapani. The ride takes about 20 minutes.
