» THE VENICE BOOKSHELF
A few years back, Giorgio Lanza expanded to full osteria status this venerable little cicchetti bar, which was first documented in 1415 and named "two swords" after a long-forgotten duel between noblemen on a nearby bridge.
Giorgio added more tables, started offering a full menu, and reopened the back room where Casanova once wined and dined his romantic conquests (it has a back door so that the famed lothario could slip out should any husbands show up).
Now in the capable hands of Martina and Sebastiano and their young staff, Cantina Do Spade is still going strong after 595 years.
They offer dishes—cuttlefish with polenta, fegato all veneziana, a trio of baccalà (salt cod), spaghetti in sauce—but also the chance to create your own piatto misto (sampler platter), mixing and matching genuine Venetian specialties, both seafood and non-.
For such quality at these prices, and a sense of sheer tradition (despite the modern décor), you can't beat Do Spade.
