Trastevere's famed pizza parlor is always thronged with locals and visitors, but the hordes haven't led it to compromise taste or prices (trust me: I've been coming here since I was 11 years old). The sidewalk tables are hard to come by, but the street's fairly trafficked, so I always choose one of the closely spaced tables inside.

The service is swift and brusque in true Trastevere style, and despite its almost terminal popularity, Ivo remains an excellent place to introduce yourself to genuine Roman wood-oven pizza.

My pick is the "plain" margherita, but also good are al prosciutto and capricciosa ("at the whim of the chef," but likely to include anchovies, prosciutto, olives, and a fried egg).

There are plenty of pastas to choose from as well, but the secondi leave enough to be desired to be left well alone.
