This Trastevere trattoria is renowned for its €10 fixed-price menu, including wine (which is why I gave it a star). Mario's is a typical tratt of rough beamed ceilings, Roman prints and postcards—and did I mention one of the cheapest set menus in town?
That set-price menu includes a first course of spaghetti alla bolognese (meat sauce), spaghetti all'Amatriciana (tomatoes, guanciale bacon, a bit of spice), or pennette all'Arrabbiata (pasta quills in a "hopping mad" tomato sauce spiced with peperoncino); a second course of pollo alla diavola (a quarter of a spicy roasted chicken), roast turkey, a breaded and fried veal cutlet alla milanese, or boiled or fried baccalà (codfish); plus a salad or cooked vegetables, fruit, 1/4 liter of white Velletri wine, 1/2 liter of mineral water, service, bread and cover charge.
A la carte, prices run €4.50 to €10 for such scrumptious selections as rigatoni alla pajata, risotto with porcini mushrooms, penne pugliese with broccoli rabe, or roast goose in a mushroom sauce.
