Snuggled up along a stretch of the ancient Aurelian Wall off Via Sannio are the covered stalls of the best markets in Rome for used clothing and army surplus (in case you need an extra pack, sleeping bag, or tent). There's also a corner dedicated to linens—tablecloths, sheets, napkins, etc.

When my family first moved to Rome in the mid-1980s, our household luggage sat on a Brooklyn dock for months (some kind of longshoreman's strike).

All we had were the proverbial shirt on our backs, plus a few spares in the suitcases we brought on the plane. Rather than hit the Via de' Condotti boutiques, the way the family in National Lampoon's European Vacation did, we ended up re-stocking our wardrobes here.

One pleasant side effect of this tactic was that since we were all wearing, in effect, Italian hand-me-downs, we started to blend in much more quickly than if we'd had access to our own American threads.
