• How to get to Pantelleria: Pantelleria is an isolated island in the southern Mediterranean 100km (62 miles) south of Sicily (and just 70km/43 miles east of Tunisia). Sicily is the gateway to Pantelleria. Flying is faster and more convenient than the ferry—and surprisingly can be just as cheap:

  • Slow ferries from Trapani: 1 daily; 4.5–6 hr. (overnight there; midday back); $80–$135 roundtrip, www.siremar.it.
