The view from the Hotel Caesar Augustus, Capri
A room at the Hotel Caesar Augustus, Capri
Perched atop a sheer cliff 1,000 feet above the azure sea at Anacapri's edge, the island's most spectacularly sited hotel—once the summer home of a Russian prince—has, tragically, remade itself from a surprisingly inexpensive four-star hotel to a Relais & Chateaux deluxe resort.

It's still great, mind you—and certainly more chic since the refit. It's just that before it was an amazing place that also happened to be an incredible bargain, and those are far rarer than what is has become: a chichi top-flight resort charging the expected five-star prices (though you can save a bit of the rack rates by booking online).

You'll understand the splurge rates when you see one of the 55 rooms, a hodgepodge of mostly antiques in large, sun-drenched settings of soothingly pale colors brightened by fresh flowers and cool tile floors, some in festive patterns.

Then there's the wraparound terrace (or, if you plump for the sea view, from your room window) and its panorama of the entire Bay of Naples, wrapping from Ischia past Vesuvius to the Sorrentina Peninsula.

Room price here is tied directly to how good the view is.

Besides peachy vistas and deluxe suites, the Caesar Augusts has a panoramic pool in the pine-shaded gardens, a Turkish Bath and Hammam, free WiFi in some rooms, and a restaurant.

The cozy bar and several lounge areas with TV all have picture windows for that killer view.
