Paintings and prints brighten this frugal haven north of Termini train station. Trust me: if this place were located closer to the heart of town, prices would be double, if not triple.

It manages a great deal of comfortable class at a surprisingly low price, ensuring a mix of backpacking students and budget-minded families. In fact, some of the large rooms can sleep up to six—perfect for families or a small group of friends.

The beds are orthopedically sound, and the arte povera furnishings are among the nicest I've seen.

Those rooms with stylish private baths also come with A/C (bathless rooms get a fan to help cool down).

The entire hotel—including the TV/chess/Internet terminal lounge—is nonsmoking, save for the sunny roof terrace, where you can take breakfast in summer.
