If there is no room to be had at the hotels below, try the aging Liberty-style rooms at the Grand Hotel a block down from the train station at Viale O. Quarta 28 ([tel] 0832-309-405, fax 0832-309-891); doubles go for 90,000L ($) without bathroom, 136,000L ($) with. I quite like the very central and low-key B&B Centro Storico, Via Andrea Vignes 2b, Lecce, tel. +39-338-588-1265 or +39-0832-242-828, www.bedandbreakfast.lecce.it, €52-€57

Cappello. Via Montegrappa 4, 73100 Lecce. tel. 0832-308-881. Fax 0832-301-535. www.thenet.it/hotelcappello. 32 units, all with bathroom. A/C MINIBAR TV TEL. 53,000L ($31.20) single; 85,000L ($50) double. AE, DC, MC, V. Parking 15,000L ($8.80). Leave the train station, turn left down Via Don Bosco, then left again onto Via Montegrappa.
The streets are quiet, but since the hotel abuts the train tracks, periodic noise is a problem, especially for rooms on the back. However, it's by far the best bargain in town. Rooms up on the first floor are the more attractive, although all are done in mismatched functional pieces with squishy beds. Accommodations are pretty small, but there's a comfy air about them, and the high vaulted ceilings help as does the full array of in-room amenities.
Risorgimento. Via A. Imperiale 19, 73100 Lecce. tel. 0832-242-125. Fax 0832-245-571. 57 units, all with bathroom. A/C MINIBAR TV TEL. 97,000L ($57.05) single; 180,000L ($105.90) double. Breakfast included. AE, DC, MC, V. Parking 15,000L ($8.80).
It's a bit pricey, but by far Lecce's best bet—it simply couldn't be more central, half a block behind the main piazza and just a few minutes’ walk from any of the city's baroque facades. Rooms are sizable, with patterned tile floors, fabric-covered walls, and antique-styled furnishings. Although beds are in good shape, the baths show some wear, and the ancient air-conditioning units just don't cool the room at all. As a bonus, the hotel restaurant offers 25,000L ($14.70) set-price Pugliese meals.
